Dante's Rock Phase

Silver gelatin prints

Documentation of rock formations in a valley close to the town of Les Baux-de-Provence, France. Dante Alighieri travelled through the region on several occasions in the 14th century, and its unusual topography is fabled to be the inspiration for his 'Purgatorio' from the epic poem 'The Divine Comedy'. Photographs taken in the region in 2011 explore possible relationships between the poem and the mountainous terrain of the area, framing a series of figurative elements emerging from the rock that Dante might have once saw.
